Victoria Community Based Organization (CBO) was founded in Jan 2025 by Lilian Were,a health worker and a resident of Homabay. The organization was born after witnessing the overwhelming challenges faced by individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease particularly the lack of access to essential medication, stigma, rejection, and gender-based violence. Having witnessed the silent struggles of children and caregivers in my community, I was moved to act. This passion led me to mobilize like-minded individuals within the community, resulting in the formation of Victoria CBO. Although we began without external funding, our strong sense of purpose and compassion fueled our efforts to advocate for improved healthcare access, raise awareness, reduce stigma, and offer hope to those living with this chronic condition.
From humble beginnings in Oyugis town, we have grown into a dedicated team working to raise awareness, advocate for better healthcare access, provide psychosocial support of patients living with sickle cell disease, reduce the isolation experienced by families, provide a recreational and therapeutic environment where children and parents can share their experiences with others in similar circumstances. Our work is grounded in compassion, dignity, and the belief that no child should suffer in silence or be denied care due to their socioeconomic status.
Victoria CBO is an organization committed to walking alongside families, amplifying their voices, facilitating access to life-saving treatments, and building a future where those affected by sickle cell disease are not only seen but supported.
Looking ahead, my vision is to extend this support beyond Homa Bay to reach more families in Siaya and Kisumu Counties.
Thank you for believing in our mission. Together, we can create lasting change.
